Scratching itches

They say that necessity is the mother of invention.  I've always thought annoyance was.

Niftyful.

Annoyed because people aren't used to drabbles, oh master of them?

No, annoyed because nobody has written an adequate word counter before.

I really like where you took your examples from, on that wordcounter page.

Also, what's up with that 15 dash rule?

In addition, I think that "that-you-had-a-boyfriend" is five words. Some things, like "ex-girlfriend" is ONE word, but other things, such as "oh-so-smart-telling-everyone-what-to-do" isn't. So I think your counter is counting wrong. There's some stuff that just needs a human hand to count.

Or, possibly, you could have your verifier say that ONE in word dash = one word, but two or more in word dashes = more than one word. (Though then we'd have problems like "mother-in-law", and I'm just not sure how many words I consider that.)

Drabble actually has formal rules--I didn't make this stuff up. Those rules call for no more than fifteen dashes. (Actually, there's an alternate set of rules that treats all dashes as spaces.)

Believe me, this sort of thing has been rehashed time and again. There's no systematic way to say "this is a word, this is two words"--you just need to pick a rule and stick with it.
