That was my thought as well. If someone's going to be that inconsiderate and abuse your service to that level, there's no reason to make things at all easy for him.

Can you play with traffic shaping as well? If certain files get more than X hits per hour, choke them back?

I've been looking into putting a cap on all of Navi's HTTP traffic, which would at least keep my parents from threatening to rip the server out of the wall. But the Linux shaping stuff is painfully complex...

On the other hand, Apache has a mod_bandwidth module that might do the trick. Hmm...

I think the idea of the fix is to deal preventatively with future fucktards as well as stopping the current one.

I see your point, but IP banning is a fun way to get rid of them once you've caught a fucktard in the act. :)

I suspected something like that might happen. Fucktards tend to be persistent about- well, being fucktards.
