So what exactly is going on, anyway?A week or two ago, the server's /var partition hit 90% usage. That's a magic value at which the server severely restricts writing new data to that drive--essentially, only the system administrator can create new files or add to existing ones. This growth was mainly caused by Filespace, which lives in /var/www/filespace, but it affected log files, databases, and all sorts of other stuff on that drive.
I've since installed a second hard drive and moved /var/www onto its own 4gb partition, but I also want to control Filespace's growth, so I've added the quota system in. I haven't announced it to Filespace's users because it's not quite finished: users who are over quota have been notified of that, but have until Tuesday to delete enough to get themselves under quota.
Nearly as importantly, I still need to write the pages needed for users to buy extra space--I feel that it's extremely important that users still be able to get more than 5mb of space if they really need it.
It hasn't been mentioned on my journal simply because I hadn't thought to--it was a decision I made more or less alone, and so far implementing it hasn't been difficult, so I never saw any reason to post to my journal about it.
I'll send out an e-mail to all users when it's done, and I'll mention it on my journal...actually, I'll probably paste this e-mail into it, now that this has come up. I may not be able to work on the "buy extra space" pages for another few days--I have an upcoming deadline--so I don't know exactly when I'll be finished.
Thanks for asking,
