Why? It's not like it's phoning home, and you can turn off any of the features (like web page caching) you don't like.

Yeah, but it sends information back to Google.
Yeah, yeah, this is kinda hypocritical coming from someone who uses and likes Gmail, which does the same thing, but I guess it would feel weird for info about computer searches going back to them. Even if it's relatively anonymous, that puts a lot of power in Google's hands.

It doesn't. It somehow advertises its presence to Google1, and other than that, AFAICT the only stuff it sends home is governed by this checkbox:

1 Actually, I suspect that it sinks its teeth deep into Winsock, so it doesn't even tell Google you have it--it modifies pages coming back from Google. Or maybe it changes DNS resolution so that all requests to Google are routed through it. I'm not really sure.
