Okay, here's the scoop.

Dad has rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your joints.  (It has nothing to do with osteoarthritis, which is age-related; he's had this since he was in his twenties.)  The effect is about as painful as you would imagine; and rather debilitating; he had arthroscopic surgery performed on his knee when the technique was still new.

For decades, he took prescription doses of Motrin (which is really an anti-inflammatory, not an analgesic) and an immunosuppressant called methotrexate.  A few years ago, he replaced Motrin with Enbrel, a much more powerful drug designed for his condition, but continued taking methotrexate.

Anyway, he's had a rather nasty cold for a couple weeks now.  He went to see a doctor today...

...and found out he had pneumonia, a rather dangerous condition for somebody with a suppressed immune system.  They immediately put him on an IV with the most powerful antibiotic they had, and prescribed some extra antibiotics as well.  They also told him to return to the hospital in the morning, and that they would admit him if he didn't show improvement.

Well, by 12:30pm or so he started having trouble breathing.  Mom took him to the local hospital; aside from a quick call asking me to read the name of the drug they prescribed off the label, I haven't heard from them since.

He's probably fine, but that doesn't make the waiting any easier. Guess I'll try to sleep...

Dad apparently came home about six this morning.

Oh, remember that thing about "drink plenty of fluids"?  Apparenlty, it's really important, and he would have avoided the hospital stay if he'd done it.

Off to grab lunch and pick up my little sister.
