Giant storms and cosmic rays

Y'know, hurricanes seemed a lot more fun when Captain Sullivan was playing cat-and-mouse with Frances last summer. Actually having to worry about people makes it way less cool.

Take care, Mississippifolk.

In completely unrelated news, I'm currently taking a couple days off the SoC project to do schoolwork. Computer Architecture is the last unit before the summer school in mid-August; it seems to mostly consist of lots of binary math and a peculiar emphasis on the CPU's fetch/decode/execute cycle. There are some nifty facts in there, though, like overviews of several compression algorithms (including JPEG, which is a rather interesting set of techniques) and an explanation of how the magical ECC error-correcting codes work. So clearly this whole schooling thing isn't a total waste.
