LJ asshattery

So the latest bit of LJ drama (in case you haven't heard, Six Apart deleted a bunch of fandom journals because--Think Of The Children!) has me thinking.

How hard would it be to extend the LJ software so that:

  1. Users could friend OpenID accounts.

  2. OpenID accounts could join communities.

  3. OpenID accounts could be associated with new local accounts such that if somebody has friended your OpenID and you create an account, they automatically friend your local account.

  4. Users could import friends and posts from another LiveJournal-based site, and maybe even mirror the remote account for a time.

The resulting "OpenJournal" would be a site that would allow people to join up without having to immediately abandon their existing journals.

Think it would work? If nothing else, it could be another Digg/09F9-like reminder of precisely who's in control on the Internet.

Ah, but wait, you're not asking about Six Apart doing this, but rather the OpenJournal liberating people from LiveJournal. hmm..

Then all things are possible.

A compare of Wordpress MU and LiveJournal is in order.
